We will not request or accept payment until programs are approved.

How it works

How private career colleges are regulated in Alberta

Any institution that charges tuition for vocational training must hold a licence under the Private Vocational Training Act (PVTA), administered by Alberta Advanced Education. Before a licence is granted, the institution and each program pass a multi-stage review.

1
Program content review

Curriculum, learning outcomes and assessment methods against provincial standards.

2
Financial assessment

Financial stability and the capacity to deliver programs without interruption.

3
Institutional review

Governance, policies, student support systems and business practices.

4
Delivery infrastructure review

For online institutions, the learning platform is examined to confirm it is fit for purpose.

Only after all components are satisfactory is a licence issued. A licensed institution may then lawfully enrol students and collect tuition for its approved programs.

Our status

Our licensing status

Ucademy has submitted its application under the PVTA. It covers the institution and the initial suite of programs, and it is currently under review. We are cooperating fully and responding promptly to any requests.

We can’t commit to a decision timeline — that is set by Alberta Advanced Education. We will communicate clearly the moment a decision is made.

Important: Ucademy’s licensing application is pending. Our programs are not yet approved and we are not currently enrolling students or accepting tuition. We will notify all registered prospective students as soon as a licensing decision has been made.

Questions we get asked

Is Ucademy accredited?

No — not in the traditional sense of institutional accreditation. "Accreditation" in the post-secondary context typically refers to recognition granted by an independent accrediting body, often used by degree-granting universities. Ucademy is a private career college, not a degree-granting university, and we do not claim university-style accreditation.

What we are pursuing is a provincial vocational training licence under the Private Vocational Training Act — the standard, legally required form of regulatory approval for private career colleges operating in Alberta. We are currently in the process of obtaining it.

Are your programs recognised by employers?

Employer recognition of a vocational credential depends on many factors — including the specific employer, the industry sector, and how well a candidate can articulate what they learned. No career college can guarantee employer recognition. What we can say is that our programs are built to Canadian industry standards, with curricula that reflect the skills employers in IT, cybersecurity, and business administration are actively hiring for.

Can I get Alberta Student Aid for Ucademy programs?

Eligibility for Alberta Student Aid depends on the approval status of the institution and the specific program. We are not in a position to confirm student loan eligibility at this time, because our licensing application is still under review. We will clarify Alberta Student Aid eligibility clearly on our tuition pages once we are licensed.

What if licensing is not approved?

If our application is not approved by Alberta Advanced Education, we will not be permitted to enrol students or collect tuition. In that event, we will notify everyone on our interest list promptly after the decision is received. Because we are not collecting tuition during the application period, there is no financial exposure for prospective students who have registered their interest.

In Alberta, any institution that charges tuition for vocational training must hold a valid licence issued by the Government of Alberta under the Private Vocational Training Act (PVTA). The PVTA is the primary legislation governing private career colleges in the province, and it exists to protect students by ensuring that schools meet defined standards before they are permitted to enrol anyone or collect tuition.

  • Program content review — each program's curriculum, learning outcomes, and assessment methods are evaluated to ensure they meet provincial standards for vocational training
  • Financial assessment — the institution must demonstrate financial stability and the capacity to deliver programs without interruption
  • Institutional review — governance, policies, student support systems, and business practices are assessed against PVTA requirements
  • Delivery infrastructure review — for online institutions, the learning platform is examined to confirm it is fit for purpose

Only after all components of this review are complete and satisfactory does Alberta Advanced Education issue a licence. A licensed institution may then lawfully enrol students and collect tuition for its approved programs.

Ucademy has submitted its licensing application to Alberta Advanced Education under the Private Vocational Training Act. Our application covers the institution itself and the initial suite of programs we intend to offer. The application is currently under review. We are cooperating fully with the review process and responding promptly to any requests for additional documentation or clarification.

We are not in a position to commit to a specific decision timeline — that is determined entirely by Alberta Advanced Education. What we can commit to is this: we will communicate clearly and promptly the moment a decision is made, whether that decision is an approval, a conditional approval, or a request for further changes.

If you have specific questions about our regulatory status or what the licensing process involves, you are welcome to contact us directly: info@ucademy.ca

You can follow the current stage of our application on our Licensing Status page, which we update as the review progresses.

Our commitment to transparency

We built this page because prospective students should have complete, accurate information about an institution’s regulatory status before investing any time researching programs. We do not yet have a licence, we are not enrolling, and we are not taking money. When our status changes, we will tell you clearly, quickly, and in plain language.

You can also verify any private career college’s licensing status with Alberta Advanced Education at alberta.ca/private-career-colleges.

Information on this page reflects Ucademy’s status as of the date of publication and is subject to change. Nothing on this page constitutes a guarantee of licensure, program approval, employment outcomes or student loan eligibility.
