Frequently asked questions
Where do the wage figures come from?
They are based on public labour-market data from the Government of Canada's Job Bank and the Government of Alberta's alis, for occupations related to each program. Job Bank updates its figures regularly, so for the latest numbers, check the Job Bank page for the occupation you are interested in, such as medical administrative assistants, administrative assistants or user support technicians.
What does “median” mean?
The median is the middle wage: half of the workers in an occupation earn less than it, and half earn more. Job Bank also publishes a low-to-high range, which is worth looking at if you are thinking about a first role in a field.
Why do wages differ across Alberta?
Pay varies by region and employer. For example, Job Bank's median hourly wage for medical administrative assistants is $30.28 in the Calgary region and $26.05 in the Lethbridge–Medicine Hat region, compared with $29.00 across Alberta. Benefits also differ — Job Bank reports that 63.9% of Alberta medical administrative assistants receive at least one non-wage benefit, so compare the whole offer, not only the hourly rate.
Does completing a program guarantee this wage or a job?
No. A certificate or diploma is one factor. Employers look at skills, experience and fit, and wages and openings vary by employer and location. Job Bank also notes that some occupations, such as software developers and cybersecurity specialists, usually require a university degree, so check the education listed for the specific role you want.
How should I use the “current wage” comparison?
Treat it as a rough comparison between the typical wage for the related occupation and what you earn now — not a forecast. It does not include benefits, hours, seniority or the fact that entry-level roles often start below the median.
