How to Negotiate Your Tech or Business Salary in Alberta

A professional calmly discussing salary with her manager

Salary negotiation feels awkward, so many people in Alberta accept the first offer. A calm, prepared counter-offer is a normal part of hiring, and the worst realistic outcome is usually that the employer says the number is fixed. This guide covers how to research a range, when to raise pay, what to say, and what else you can ask for if base pay cannot move.

The short version
  • Wait for an offer before you discuss pay in detail. Alberta’s ALIS career site advises leaving pay and benefits questions until after the job is offered, and notes that once you accept you can no longer negotiate changes.
  • Research a range first. Job Bank’s Alberta medians in the data below run from $26.43 an hour (administrative assistant) to $48.08 (software developer), and each job’s range is wide.
  • Some roles have little room, such as grid-based or unionized positions. Others, particularly without a collective agreement, may have room on salary, benefits, vacation or review timing.
  • Counter with a specific number and a short reason. Get the final terms in writing.
  • If base pay is fixed, ask about professional development funding, remote days, start date or an earlier review.

Research a range before you talk numbers

Know your range before any salary conversation begins. Use more than one source, and put the most weight on the ones that publish how they collect their data.

  • Government of Canada Job Bank: wages by occupation and region in Alberta, with low, median and high figures.
  • alis Wage and Salary Survey: Alberta employer survey with starting, average and top wages for many occupations.
  • Posted salary ranges in job ads for the same title and city.
  • Conversations with people in your field. Direct, honest conversations about pay are increasingly normal in tech communities. Our guide to networking in Alberta shows how to start them.
  • User-reported sites such as LinkedIn, Glassdoor and Indeed. They can show patterns, but they rely on self-reported numbers, so use them to cross-check, not to set your number.

How to read a wage range

Job Bank’s low and high figures are, in most cases, roughly the 10th and 90th percentiles: about one worker in ten earns the low figure or less, and about one in ten earns the high figure or more. The median is the midpoint. A new hire usually starts below the median and moves up with experience, so the median is a reference, not a target. Wages also depend on employer, experience and location.

Offers for salaried roles are quoted as annual numbers, while Job Bank reports hourly wages. A rough conversion helps you compare.

Job (Job Bank, Alberta, 2023–2024)Median hourly wageApproximate annual, 40 hours a week for 52 weeks
Administrative assistant$26.43$55,000
IT support technician$30.00$62,400
Computer network technician$38.67$80,400
Software developer$48.08$100,000

Calculation by the author: hourly wage × 40 × 52, rounded to the nearest $100, before tax. Medians describe all workers in the job, not a starting wage and not what any Ucademy student will earn.

When and how to negotiate your salary in Alberta

Wait for the offer before negotiating. When it comes, thank the employer, and take time to consider it; you are not required to respond immediately. Ask for the offer in writing, or, if that is not possible, take careful notes and ask the employer to confirm them. An employer can withdraw an offer, even a written one, until you accept it, so stay professional throughout.

If the offer is below the range you researched, respond with a specific counter-offer and a short reason. “Based on my research and the skills I bring in [specific area], I was expecting something closer to $X. Is there flexibility there?” is a professional, direct opener.

Six steps from offer to agreement
  1. 1
    Get the offer in writing
Ask for the full terms: salary, hours, benefits, start date, review timing.
  2. 2
Thank them and ask for time
A day or two is normal. Say when you will reply.
  3. 3
    Compare it to your range
Place the offer against Job Bank, alis and posted ranges for your city.
  4. 4
    Decide your terms
Know your minimum, your target and what else would make the offer acceptable.
  5. 5
    Make one clear counter
Give a number, a reason, and a question. Then stop talking and listen.
  6. 6
Confirm what you agreed in writing
If you reach a verbal agreement, ask for written confirmation before you resign from another job.

Two ways to ask for more
Weak
“I need more because rent in Calgary is expensive.”
Stronger
“Job Bank’s Alberta data puts the median for this role at about $X. With my project experience in reporting and databases, I was expecting a number closer to $Y. Is there flexibility?”
Weak
Accepting at once, then asking for changes the next day
Stronger
Asking for a day to review, then making one counter-offer before accepting

When there is little room to move

ALIS notes that jobs covered by a collective agreement, and entry-level or grid-based positions where you are placed according to education or experience, can leave less room to negotiate. Public-sector and unionized pay scales are usually set by agreement, not by individual bargaining. In those cases, ask how you are placed on the grid, and whether your prior experience counts.

Beyond base salary

Total compensation includes more than the salary line. When the number is fixed, negotiate on other items. Without a collective agreement, ALIS lists benefits such as health and dental coverage, vacation time and more frequent increases among the things you might be able to negotiate.

Items to ask about
ItemWhat to ask
Professional developmentA yearly budget for courses, certifications or conferences. Early in a career this is especially valuable because it compounds.
Remote or hybrid daysHow many days at home, and whether this is written into the offer.
Salary reviewAn earlier review, for example after six months, with clear criteria.
Start dateA date that gives you time to finish notice at your current job.
BenefitsWhen coverage begins, and what is included for health, dental and vision.
TitleA title that reflects the work you will do, which matters for your next move.

Alberta context for comparing offers

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, but it does charge provincial income tax: 8% on the first $61,200 of taxable income in 2026, and 10% on income from $61,200 to $154,259. Federal tax applies on top. Provincial taxes differ across Canada, so compare offers from different provinces after tax, not on gross salary alone.

If the answer is no

Thank the employer and ask what would need to be true for a raise in six or twelve months. Then decide whether the offer works for you at the stated number. A calm, professional exchange rarely harms the relationship, and a clear no is information you can act on.

Once you accept, the next focus is the start. Our guide to the first 90 days in a new tech or business job covers it. Frequently Asked Questions

When is the right time to negotiate salary during a Canadian hiring process?

The best moment is after you have received a formal offer and before you have accepted it. At this stage the employer has already decided they want you, which gives you the most leverage. Negotiating during the interview process before an offer is made can put you at a disadvantage and may signal that compensation is your primary motivation.

How do I research what to ask for without publicly available salary data?

Consult multiple sources: LinkedIn Salary Insights, Glassdoor, Payscale, and the Government of Canada's Job Bank all publish compensation ranges by occupation and region. Professional associations in your field often publish member compensation surveys. Informational interviews with people in similar roles can also give you a realistic sense of what the market looks like in Alberta.

What should I say when an employer asks for my salary expectations?

If possible, defer until you have more information about the full scope of the role. You can say you would like to learn more about the responsibilities before naming a number. If pressed, offer a researched range rather than a single number, and anchor the range slightly above your true target to leave room for negotiation downward.

What can I negotiate beyond base pay in Alberta tech and business roles?

Many employers are open to negotiating remote work arrangements, additional vacation days, a signing bonus, professional development funding, a flexible start date, or an earlier performance review. If the base pay is firm, shifting the conversation to these elements can still meaningfully improve the overall offer.
