Accounting and Bookkeeping Careers in Alberta: What You Need to Know

A bookkeeper working with a calculator and spreadsheet

Accounting and bookkeeping jobs exist in nearly every Alberta business, from oil and gas contractors to a one-person design studio. They are four different jobs, though: bookkeeper, accounting clerk, payroll administrator and accountant. Job Bank rates the 2025–2027 Alberta outlook as Good for bookkeepers and accounting clerks and Moderate for payroll administrators and accountants. A bookkeeper does not need a CPA; an accountant does.

The short version
  • Bookkeepers record and organize transactions: accounts payable and receivable, payroll, bank reconciliation and basic reporting.
  • Alberta median hourly wages (Job Bank): accounting clerk $25.96, bookkeeper $30.00, payroll administrator $31.18, accountant $43.27.
  • Job Bank says bookkeeper entry is secondary school plus a college program in accounting or bookkeeping, or two years of a professional accounting program, or courses plus several years as an accounting clerk.
  • Accountants need a university degree and a professional designation (CPA). The other three roles do not.
  • Only 56% of Alberta bookkeepers work full-time, so part-time and contract work is common.

Bookkeeper, accounting clerk, payroll administrator or accountant

Bookkeepers record and organize financial transactions: accounts payable and receivable, payroll, bank reconciliation and basic financial reporting. In a small business, the bookkeeper often is the finance department, and an outside accountant reviews the year-end.

Accounting clerks do a narrower slice of that work, usually entering invoices, matching payments and keeping accounts payable or receivable current. It is a common entry point.

Payroll administrators make sure people are paid correctly and on time. The Canada Revenue Agency tells employers to deduct CPP contributions, EI premiums and income tax, remit them and file information slips such as the T4, so payroll work is exact and deadline-driven.

Accountants analyze financial data, prepare tax returns, run audits and advise on financial strategy. CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) is the standard designation for senior accounting roles in Canada and requires a degree and professional examinations.

What a bookkeeper’s month looks like

The work repeats on a calendar. Knowing the rhythm helps you decide whether it suits you, because it rewards people who are careful, consistent and comfortable with deadlines.

A typical monthly cycle for a small-business bookkeeper
  1. 1
    Every week
Enter supplier bills and customer invoices, match payments received, follow up on unpaid invoices.
  2. 2
    Every pay period
Prepare payroll, calculate deductions and make sure remittances reach the Canada Revenue Agency on time.
  3. 3
    Month end
Reconcile bank and credit card statements against the ledger and chase differences until the balance matches.
  4. 4
    After month end
Produce basic reports such as a profit and loss statement and pass them to the owner or accountant.
  5. 5
    At year end
Collect records, prepare T4 slips and give the accountant a clean set of books.

A general description of the work, not a schedule from a specific employer.

Accuracy is the real skill. A transposed digit can hold up a reconciliation for an afternoon, and the habit of checking your own work is what employers notice.

Bars show the 5th to 95th percentile of hourly pay among surveyed employers and the dot is the median. “Start” is the pay employers offered for entry-level positions with this job title; “top” is the pay offered to top-paid employees. It is not what any program’s graduates earn. The survey covers employers believed to have 8 or more employees and excludes overtime, tips, bonuses and benefits. It is a different survey from Job Bank, so the numbers differ. Data reliability codes: Bookkeepers: A (high); Accounting clerks: A (high).

A few points stand out. The accounting clerk median ($25.96) sits about $4 below the bookkeeper median ($30.00), and the accountant median ($43.27) is much higher but needs a degree and designation. Employers surveyed in 2023 offered bookkeepers a median starting wage of $23.00 an hour, which is what a first job may look like. The spread between the low ($20.00) and high ($50.96) bookkeeper figures shows how much experience, employer size and responsibilities change pay.

The 56% full-time share is the number to weigh. Many bookkeepers combine several small clients or part-time hours. That suits some people and not others, so ask about hours before you accept an offer.

Where the outlook is strongest in Alberta

Job Bank rates bookkeepers Good in Alberta and in all eight regions it lists. Accounting clerks are rated Good everywhere except Wood Buffalo–Cold Lake, where the rating is Moderate. Payroll administrators are Moderate in every region, and accountants are Moderate in seven of eight regions and Good in Camrose–Drumheller. The ratings describe the outlook for 2025–2027, not the number of jobs advertised this month.

Because the outlook is similar across regions, location matters less here than in some fields. Remote bookkeeping for Alberta small businesses is common, so a candidate outside Calgary and Edmonton can still work with clients in both.

Where to look for a first role

  • Small and mid-sized businesses. Trades companies, clinics, property managers and retailers often hire a part-time bookkeeper first.
  • Accounting and bookkeeping firms. They take on clerks and junior bookkeepers and train them on several clients’ files.
  • Payroll service providers and larger employers. Payroll teams hire assistants who can handle detail under deadlines.
  • Non-profits, municipalities and school boards. They post accounting clerk roles with fixed hours and public-sector pay scales.

Search Job Bank and Alberta job boards for “bookkeeper”, “accounts payable clerk”, “accounts receivable”, “payroll assistant” and “accounting assistant”. The titles vary more than the work.

Before you apply for a bookkeeping job
  • ☐You can explain accounts payable, accounts receivable and a bank reconciliation in one sentence each.
  • ☐You have practised in one accounting package using sample company data.
  • ☐You can build a simple Excel reconciliation and a pivot table.
  • ☐Your resume names the software, the volume of work and the deadlines you met.
  • ☐You know the expected hours, and whether the role is full-time, part-time or contract.

Software Alberta employers expect

There is no official ranking of accounting software, so treat this list as what job postings and small-business practice commonly mention rather than a statistic.

  • QuickBooks. Widely used in small businesses.
  • Sage 50. Common in mid-sized firms.
  • Xero. Growing adoption among newer small businesses.
  • Microsoft Excel. Used in every accounting role, for reconciliations, pivot tables and reports.

Learn one package well, then check the posting. If an employer asks for Sage 50 and you know QuickBooks, say so and explain how the logic carries over. The concepts of ledgers, accounts and reconciliation are the same across them.

Starting without a CPA

Bookkeeping and accounting technician roles do not require a CPA. Job Bank’s entry route is a college program in accounting or bookkeeping, or equivalent courses with experience, together with software skills. The CPA path is longer, and it makes sense if you want to become a senior accountant or controller.

A useful way to compare the two routes is by the credential you hold at each stage. The illustration below shows the certificate, diploma and degree rungs; for bookkeeping, the first two are usually enough to start, while the accountant route sits at the degree level.

Illustration of three ascending steps holding a certificate, a diploma and a degree book, with a person deciding which path to take
Writing a bookkeeping resume line
Weak
Handled accounts and paperwork for the office.
Stronger
Entered and coded [number] supplier invoices a month in QuickBooks and reconciled two bank accounts to zero variance each month-end.
Weak
Good with numbers.
Stronger
Prepared bi-weekly payroll for [number] employees and filed remittances on the due date.

Example wording. Replace each [number] with your own real figure and software; never invent one.

Small employers rarely have time to train from scratch, so the candidates who stand out show a finished piece of work: a practice set of books, a reconciliation they built, or a clear explanation of how they would catch an error. Bring one to the interview. It answers the question every hiring manager has, which is whether you can be trusted with the numbers.

Which route to read next

If you are weighing office roles generally, the guide to entry-level business jobs in Alberta without a degree compares accounting clerk work with other starting points. Certificate, diploma or degree explains the credential levels in plain terms, and the administrative assistant salary guide shows the neighbouring office role.

Ucademy’s seven programs are in technology, business administration and healthcare, and none is a bookkeeping program. The overlap is office software and business communication in the Administrative Assistant Diploma, and you can see all options on the programs page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between accounting and bookkeeping as a career?

Bookkeeping typically involves recording day-to-day financial transactions — accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll entries, and bank reconciliations. Accounting involves a broader scope including financial analysis, reporting, tax preparation, and strategic financial advisory. Many people begin in bookkeeping and move into accounting roles over time.

What training or credentials do I need to work in bookkeeping or accounting in Alberta?

Entry-level bookkeeping positions often require a diploma or certificate in accounting, bookkeeping, or business administration, along with proficiency in software such as QuickBooks or Sage. For accounting roles, further study and designation pathways — such as the CPA — become relevant as you advance in your career.

Is bookkeeping a career that offers remote or flexible work options in Alberta?

Yes. Bookkeeping is well-suited to remote work because much of the work is software-based and can be done from any location with secure access. Many small businesses in Alberta contract bookkeepers on a part-time or freelance basis, which offers scheduling flexibility alongside employment opportunities.

What software skills should I develop for an accounting or bookkeeping career?

QuickBooks Online and Desktop, Sage 50, and Microsoft Excel are the most common tools listed in Alberta job postings for bookkeeping and accounting roles. Familiarity with cloud-based accounting platforms is increasingly expected, and basic spreadsheet skills — including pivot tables and formulas — are valued across the field.
