Transfer credit and prior learning assessment
How courses you have already taken, or skills you already have from work, may count toward a Ucademy program.
Draft for review. This policy is provided in draft form while Ucademy’s licensure in Alberta is pending, and will be finalized and confirmed against current provincial requirements before enrolment opens.
1Purpose
Many adult learners come to Ucademy with courses or work experience that cover part of a program. This policy explains how that learning can be recognized.
2Two ways to get credit
- Transfer credit — for a course you completed at a recognized post-secondary institution or training provider that matches a Ucademy course in content, level and hours.
- Prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) — for skills you gained through work or other experience, shown through a challenge assessment, a portfolio or a practical demonstration.
3How to apply
- Apply in writing before you start the course you want credit for.
- For transfer credit, provide an official transcript and the course outline. For PLAR, provide the evidence your advisor asks for, such as work samples or references.
- Ucademy reviews your application and gives a written decision within 10 business days of receiving complete documents.
4Limits
- Credit is normally granted for courses completed within the last five years. Technology courses may need to be more recent because content changes quickly.
- Transfer credit requires a passing grade of at least 60% (or equivalent) in the original course.
- Combined transfer credit and PLAR can cover no more than half of a program.
- A practicum or internship is not normally replaced by credit.
5How credit appears and affects fees
Transfer credit appears on your transcript as “TC” and PLAR as “PLAR”; neither is included in a grade average. Any fee for assessment and any tuition adjustment for credited courses will be stated in the published fee schedule and in your enrolment contract.
6Credit from Ucademy at other schools
Whether another college or university accepts Ucademy courses is decided by that institution. Keep your course outlines and transcripts, and ask the receiving institution before you plan around it.
7Appeals
You may appeal a decision under this policy in writing within 15 days of receiving it. The appeal is reviewed by a senior administrator who was not involved in the original decision, and a written decision is provided within 10 business days.
