Database administrators (DBAs) keep a company’s databases running, secure and backed up. Database developers design the tables and write the queries and code that applications use to store and retrieve data. In Alberta, Job Bank puts both in one group, database analysts and data administrators, with a median wage of $39.82 an hour, about 5,400 workers and a Moderate outlook for 2025–2027.
The short version
- Pay: the Alberta median is $39.82 an hour (range $28.27 to $60.58), against $40.87 across Canada. Edmonton’s median is $45.80 (Job Bank, 2023–2024).
- Outlook 2025–2027: Moderate in Alberta. Job Bank rates Calgary and Edmonton Moderate and gives no rating for the other regions.
- Size and hours: about 5,400 people work in this group in Alberta, and 94% of them work full-time, against 80% across all occupations.
- Education: 58% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (39% bachelor’s, 19% above).
- Hiring: 14% of Alberta employers that recruited for the role had trouble hiring (2023).
Database administrator and database developer compared
Database administrators focus on keeping databases operational, secure and fast. Their work includes backups, user permissions, performance tuning and disaster recovery.
Database developers design database structures and write the code that interacts with them: stored procedures, queries and integrations. They work closely with software developers to build the data layer of applications.
| Database administrator | Database developer | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Keep the database available, secure and recoverable | Design the tables and write the code that uses them |
| A typical task | Check overnight backups, review slow queries, set who can see which tables | Design a new table, write a stored procedure, speed up a report query |
| Problem they prevent | Lost data, outages, unauthorized access | Slow pages, duplicate or inconsistent records |
| Works most with | Systems and security staff | Software developers and analysts |
| Core skills | Backup and restore, permissions, performance tuning, monitoring | SQL, data modelling, query design, version control |
Job Bank does not separate the two roles; both sit in one group. Small employers often expect one person to do both.
Two sample days
These are illustrative days, not survey results, but they show how the work differs. A database administrator might spend a day like this:
- Confirm that the overnight backups finished and the weekly restore test passed.
- Review the slowest queries in the monitoring tool and decide which need an index.
- Apply a patch in the agreed maintenance window, then check that the applications still connect.
- Give a new analyst read-only access to the sales tables, and nothing more.
A database developer’s day tends to look different:
- Read the request for a new report and agree which fields it needs.
- Add a table or column in a development copy of the database, using a script that can be run again.
- Rewrite a slow query and compare the run time before and after.
- Ask a colleague to review the change before it reaches the live database.
In both roles the habits matter as much as the syntax: write changes as scripts, test on a copy, and keep a record of what changed and why.
Core technologies to know
- Relational databases: SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle.
- Cloud databases: Azure SQL, AWS RDS, Google Cloud SQL.
- NoSQL (mainly for developer roles): MongoDB, Redis.
- SQL is non-negotiable for both roles.
SQL is the language for asking a database questions. One line shows the idea: SELECT customer_id, SUM(amount) FROM orders GROUP BY customer_id; adds up the order amounts for each customer. The details differ slightly between SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Oracle, so learn one engine well first.
Backups are the DBA’s first test. A backup is only proven when you have restored it, so practise restoring a copy on a spare database before you need it.

Where database jobs are in Alberta
The five largest industries for Alberta database analysts and data administrators, according to Job Bank, are computer systems design services (21%), oil and gas extraction (9%), architectural, engineering and design services (8%), hospitals (6%) and public administration (5%). The other 51% work across many other sectors.
Two things stand out. Public bodies and hospitals together employ 11%, so government and health care are real employers of this skill. And Calgary’s finance and energy head offices run large data systems, but finance does not appear in Job Bank’s top five; oil and gas extraction does.

What the pay and hiring figures say
Regional medians run from $39.82 in the province as a whole to $44.06 in Calgary and $45.80 in Edmonton (Calgary and several other regions are model estimates). Wages depend on the employer and experience, and Job Bank groups administrators and developers together.
The hiring signal is milder than for some other tech roles: 14% of employers had trouble hiring, against 36% for software developers in the same survey year. Outside Calgary and Edmonton, Job Bank gives no outlook rating, so a search in a smaller centre rests on fewer data points. None of these figures describes what a program’s students will earn.
Breaking into the field
A strong SQL foundation is the entry point. Structured IT study that covers database fundamentals, plus personal projects that show you can design and run a database, gives an employer something to assess.
- 1Learn SQL fundamentals
SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY, constraints and indexes, using one engine such as PostgreSQL or SQL Server. - 2Design a schema for a real problem
For example bookings for a small clinic or the schedule and results for a hockey league. Draw the tables first, then build them. - 3Load data and write the reports
Write five queries that answer questions the business would ask, and check them against hand counts. - 4Practise the administrator tasks
Take a backup, restore it to a second database, create users with limited permissions and read a query plan. - 5Try a cloud database
Set up a small instance in Azure, AWS or Google Cloud and connect an application to it. - 6Document it
Put the schema, scripts and a short README on GitHub so a reviewer can see your reasoning.

Vendor certifications from Microsoft or AWS can add credibility, but vendors retire and rename exams, so check their current lists before you study for one. Our guide to whether tech certifications are worth it in Canada covers how to decide.
Ucademy’s technology programs include the IT Professional Certificate (420 hours) and the Software & Web Developer Diploma (960 hours). Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Database Administrator and a Database Developer?
A Database Administrator (DBA) focuses on maintaining, securing, and optimizing existing databases to ensure they run reliably. A Database Developer designs and builds database structures, writes queries, and creates the logic that applications use to store and retrieve data. In smaller organizations, one person may handle both roles.
What programming or query languages should I learn for a database career in Canada?
SQL is the core language for nearly all database work and is non-negotiable. Depending on the employer, familiarity with databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or Oracle is valuable. Some roles also require knowledge of Python or other scripting languages for automation and data processing.
Can I break into database work without a computer science degree?
Yes. Many working DBAs and database developers started with a diploma or certificate program, then built on it through hands-on projects, self-study, and vendor certifications such as Microsoft's or Oracle's database credentials. A strong portfolio demonstrating real database design and query skills can open doors.
Which industries in Canada hire Database Administrators and Developers?
Healthcare, finance, government, energy, retail, and technology companies all rely heavily on well-managed databases. In Alberta specifically, the energy sector and provincial government are significant employers of database professionals.
