Supply chain coordinators keep orders moving. They track purchase orders from placement to delivery, talk to suppliers and carriers, and keep inventory records accurate. In Alberta, Job Bank reports a median wage of $34.61 an hour for production and transportation logistics coordinators (a 2024 model estimate), rates the 2025–2027 outlook as Limited, and lists a post-secondary program of under two years, or related experience, as the usual way in.
The short version
- Pay: the Alberta median is $34.61 an hour (range $22.32 to $54.99), against $29.49 across Canada. Employers surveyed in 2023 reported a median starting pay of $24.31.
- Outlook 2025–2027: Limited in Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba, Moderate in Saskatchewan, and Very limited in Ontario and Quebec (Job Bank).
- Entry: a post-secondary program of less than two years in business or supply chain management, or extensive experience as a dispatcher, production clerk or scheduling clerk.
- Size: about 3,050 logistics coordinators work in Alberta, and 33,400 across Canada (2023).
- Hiring: 39% of Alberta employers recruited for the role in the last two years; 23% of those had trouble hiring and 4% had a vacancy open for more than four months (2023).
What a supply chain coordinator does
The pandemic made supply chain work visible to most Canadians, because empty shelves and delayed deliveries had a cause somebody had to trace. Coordinators are the people who do that tracing every day. They sit between the buyer who places an order, the supplier who fills it, the carrier who moves it and the warehouse that receives it.
Core responsibilities
- Monitor purchase orders from placement to delivery and flag the ones at risk.
- Coordinate with suppliers, freight carriers and customs brokers.
- Maintain accurate inventory records in an ERP (enterprise resource planning) system such as SAP, Oracle or NetSuite.
- Resolve shipment delays, shortages and quality issues.
- Support the procurement team with vendor quotes and comparisons.
- 1Purchase order sent
The buyer sends the order. The coordinator checks that quantities, prices and delivery dates are in the system. - 2Supplier confirms a ship date
No confirmation after a day or two is the first warning sign, so the coordinator follows up. - 3Carrier booked, documents ready
For cross-border freight, a customs broker needs the paperwork before the truck leaves. - 4Goods received and checked
The warehouse counts the delivery against the order. Shortages and damage are recorded the same day. - 5Inventory updated
The ERP system shows the new stock, so sales and planning work from the right numbers. - 6Invoice matched
The supplier’s invoice is compared with the order and the receipt before accounts payable pays it.
Industries that hire in Alberta
Job Bank lists the largest industries for Alberta logistics coordinators: truck transportation (17%), oil and gas extraction (12%), wholesale trade (8%) and construction (6%). The rest work across many other sectors. Retail and agriculture also hire coordinators, but neither is among the largest employers on Job Bank’s list, so check postings in those sectors directly.
Pay varies a little by region. The model-estimate medians are $33.87 in Calgary, $32.16 in Edmonton, $36.92 in Red Deer, $31.68 in Lethbridge–Medicine Hat, $34.56 in Banff–Jasper and $33.40 in Camrose–Drumheller. Job Bank publishes no figure for Athabasca–Grande Prairie or Wood Buffalo–Cold Lake.

Skills that matter most
- ERP and inventory software, plus a confident hand with spreadsheets.
- Data analysis: tracking measures such as on-time delivery and fill rate.
- Vendor communication and negotiation basics.
- Attention to detail for compliance and documentation.
The two measures are simple arithmetic. On-time delivery is the share of orders that arrive by the promised date: a supplier that delivers 46 of 50 orders on time scores 92%. Fill rate is the share of ordered lines shipped complete: 188 of 200 lines is 94%. Coordinators watch both by supplier and act when a number slips.
| Weak | Stronger (fill in your own numbers) |
|---|---|
| Responsible for tracking orders. | Tracked [number] open purchase orders a week in [system name], followed up late shipments with [number] carriers and reduced overdue lines from [number] to [number]. |
| Worked with suppliers. | Compared quotes from [number] suppliers for [product type] and moved the order to the supplier with the better delivery record. |
This is a template, not a real example. Write only numbers you can explain in an interview.

Job Bank’s “low” and “high” are, in most cases, the 10th and 90th percentiles: about one worker in ten earns the low figure or less and about one in ten earns the high figure or more. Wages depend on the employer, experience and location and are not guaranteed. Rows marked * are Statistics Canada model estimates for 2024 (Job Bank, Small Area Estimation) rather than survey results, so compare them with care. “Not published” means Job Bank shows no figure for that region.

How to get in
Job Bank accepts either a post-secondary program of under two years in business or supply chain management, or extensive experience as a dispatcher, production clerk or scheduling clerk. That means a move from the warehouse or an office desk is a recognised route, not only a diploma.
- If you have warehouse, dispatch or scheduling experienceapply for coordinator roles now, and add ERP and spreadsheet skills that you can show.
- If you come from customer service or data entrylook first at purchasing and inventory control roles (outlook Moderate in Alberta), where accuracy and system skills transfer.
- If you have no related experiencestart as a shipper and receiver (outlook Good in Alberta) or inventory clerk, and study part-time toward the coordinator level.
Outlooks are Job Bank’s Alberta ratings for 2025–2027. Job Bank does not track individual career moves, so treat this as a map of routes, not a promise.

Professional designations, such as APICS CSCP or those from the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT), can support moves to senior coordinator or analyst roles. Check each body’s entry rules before you plan around one.
